After studying history at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (1994) and passing the history agrégation in 1996, Romain Huret earned a master’s degree in US history (1998) and a PhD (2003), both from the EHESS. He also earned an HDR from the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne in 2012.
Between 1999 and 2000, he was a visiting scholar at the University of Virginia as a Fulbright scholar. He was lecturer at the University of Artois from 2000–2004, and Associate Professor at the University of Lyon-II from 2006–2014. From 2008–2013, he was a junior member of the Institut universitaire de France (IUF), before being elected Director of studies (Full Professor) at the EHESS in 2014. Between 2015–2017, he headed the Centre for North American Studies (CENA) and co-headed the UMR Mondes américains (UMR 8168 EHESS-CNRS).
As a member of the EHESS Presidency Bureau in 2017, he was Dean of Research. He has been a visiting or associate Professor in many universities including Harvard University, University of Virginia, Geneva, and Bucharest.
Romain Huret has published extensively in English and French, including American Tax Resisters (Harvard University Press, 2014) and Les millions de monsieur Mellon (La Découverte, 2023). His most recent book is titled Les oubliés de la Saint-Valentin — Des vies à l’ombre du mariage (La Découverte, 2026).
He was elected President of the EHESS in November 2022.
