The Institute supports experimentation in the mediation of ideas and practices in all of its activities. We will occasionally highlight the work of particular practitioners who understand the concept of “media experiment” both in its techno-cultural and etymological senses. In the former sense, the term refers to technological mediations with tools and instruments (old and new media, analogical and digital), while the latter indicates the fact that humans are constantly being immersed “in the middle of things.” To experiment with media is to experiment with this double valence.
Raqs Media Collective is a group of three media practitioners — Jeebesh Bagchi, Monica Narula, and Shuddhabrata Sengupta — based in New Delhi. Raqs has been variously described as artists, curators, researchers, editors, and catalysts of cultural processes. Their work locates them at the intersections of contemporary art, historical enquiry, philosophical speculation, research, and theory.
